Christmas Giving

There is a Christmas T.V. or Radio Jingle in the script that is in Bold and underlined. This script works best if you substitute the latest most popular jingle from your area. Have this line sung in tune by the young actor.

Scene opens with Father and the two kids (Fred and Sue) sitting on the floor playing a board game
Perhaps Grandma could be fiddling with the tree. Uncle Bill is sitting in one of the two chairs, watching the game. Jane (the Mother) walks in with shopping bags full.

Bill: Jane, do you remember when I was Freds age, I had the starring role in the Christmas pagent.

Jane:That's right you were sheep #1

Bill: No, don't you remember I was the Angel proclaiming to all, the good news. (Pause) You were the sheep.

Jane: Baa

Bill: "Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be….oh I can't remember, do you have a Bible so I can look it up?

Jane: Right behind you , I'll grab it.(Grabs bible from shelf and hands it to him then sits in the chair next to him.

Bill: "Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the
people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord.”

Jane: Hey I remember now, I wasn't a sheep, I was the Virgin Mary.

Bill: That's right, neither of us had to wear those scratchy burlap costumes that year.

Fred: They are awfull, I'm a shepherd this year, and I'm getting a rash.

Jane: I still remember some of my lines too, when you as the angel appeared to me you said.

Bill: "Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you." , "Do not be afraid, Mary, you have found favor with God. You will be with child and give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever; his kingdom will never end."

Jane: I think I'll read along , ( leans over so she can read along) "How will this be," "since I am a virgin?"

Bill: "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God. Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child in her old age, and she who was said to be barren is in her sixth month. For nothing is impossible with God."

Jane: "I am the Lord's servant," "May it be to me as you have said."

Grandma: Bill

Bill: Yes Mom

Grandma: You were a sheep.

Jane: Baa

Bill: Very funny.

Sue: Dad, can we open our presents?

Dad: Ask your Mom.

Jane: Luke can't you make any decisions.

Dad: I'm not sure, am I allowed.

Fred: Did someone say presents?

Sue: Yeah lets open some presents.

Bill: Oh I hope I don't get another neon tie as a gift.

Grandma: The Greatest gift is the one God gave us.

Fred: Did someone say presents?

Sue:Yeah lets open some presents.

Jane: Pipe down

Fred and Sue: (slinking) Yes Mom

Grandma: (to Fred and Sue) Kids do you know what that gift is? (Fred starts to rummage under the tree)

Sue: (looks at Fred and shakes her head) It was something little wasn't it.

Grandma: Yes, something little but precious.

Sue: Well I (shruks her sholders as she is not sure)

Grandma: Jesus, A little Baby born to take on the sins of the world.

Dad: Well that's all very well, but I think theres a little to much gift giving going on. (picks up the two bags of parcels and remarks) Maybe I should look at getting a second job.

Fred: “Shopping is good at the Bay

Bill : Well Luke looks like Lucy has taken all those commercials to heart, you know the ones “ It's the season for giving” (again this last part could be sung like a commercial jingle)

Lucy: I know Bill, every year I get caught up and buy too much, I think I'll return this one, to sort of, mend my ways a bit. (She picks up one of the boxes and starts to walk off)

Bill: What's that one

Lucy: Your gift

Bill: Now hold on a second, lets not be to hasty.

Lucy : I'm just kidding but I think I do get carried away. (She picks up the newspaper and flips it open to the help wanted section, then hands it to Luke) Here's the help wanted section.

Dad: Thanks a lot, this season for giving is giving me a hole in my wallet.

Grandma: It should really be the season for forgiving

Lucy: What's that?

Grandma: The season for forgiving

Dad: Meaning?

Grandma: Well that first gift was a gift of forgiveness.

Lucy: Oh, like all those Christmas stories from years ago

Uncle: Right, God so loved the world he gave his one and only son.

Dad: Oh don't go there again, I put up with Christmas every year do you have to bring religion into it.

Grandma: Here Luke I brought you a gift (she hands him a present)

Dad: Thanks (before he can unwrap it Grandma says)

Grandma: There you did it.

Luke: What , what did I do?

Grandma: Well you did the second part of this gift giving business. You accepted it.

Dad: Well that's easy.

Lucy: Sometimes, but I know a gift that has been offered to you and Bill for years and you two haven't accepted.

Bill: Offer again!

Grandma: What shes talking about is “the season for forgiving” God offered us the Gift of forgiveness when Two milleniums ago Jesus was Born. A child was born to die for your sins.

Lucy: And mine

Grandma: And mine too, God gave us the gift but it's of no value to us if we don't accept it.

Lucy: It's like an unwrapped present. It sits there with nice paper and a bow, but we'll never know what we have unless we accept the gift and unwrap it, and I can guarantee that gift is way better than the neon tie I gave you last year.

Sue: “It's the gift that keeps on giving”
