Homeless Christmas
(A Message of Hope.)
To effectively pull this monologue off, will require the actor to jump from one personality to another. The multi dimensional character has two or possibly three personalities. One the good, the other the bad, and a possible third who sings the songs.
Scene opens with a shopping cart full of the worldly possessions of the homeless.
Hey leave my stuff alone!
(Yell this line from the back of the sanctuary, as you quickly run to the shopping cart, as if scaring off someone intent on taking your stuff, the next lines are delivered to the audience)
Did you see that? I leave for two minutes and someone is trying to run off with all I have. Low life, thief! (Yell this at the offender)
Robbers and crooks. I went to the bank today, made a withdrawal, never have made a deposit. I got a bag full. Got me some Mac and cheese, a couple cans of beans, a can of some processed meat and fruit cocktail. The food bank is the only bank I go to. Robbers and crooks, desperate thief, (Pause) really just the same as me, only I’m no thief. (Mumbles) Robbers and crooks. (Talking to himself) You’re desperate. Not now, I’ve been to the bank. Go to a real bank. No need, no need, no need.
(Shoveling through possessions, pulls on a scarf, then starts to sing) Do you see what I see? (Pause) I see dead people! (Pause then laughs again)
No, no dead people, but I do hear voices. (Resumes singing) Do you hear what I hear?
(Sits down on the first step) Sometimes I think I must see dead people because, no one sees me. Look me in the eyes, I dare you. I have my hat in my hand and everyone walks by as if I don’t exist. Lonely, I’m always alone (singing) and when I am alone, and when I am alone, and when I am alone, give me Jesus. (Pause) I’m here! Look at me! Here I am a child of God! (Mumbles to self again) Child of who? Probably don’t know who your mother is? Shut up! (Quiet for a moment) I’m a child of God; I even thought I’d be an altar boy one time. It seems like so long ago now, that it must have been in a previous life. Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world have mercy on us. Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world grant us peace. (Starts singing) Peace on earth and mercy mild, God and sinners reconciled. (Pause) I’m a sinner. That’s why he came. Who came? Jesus.
(Obvious character change required here)
There you go again talking about your ole buddy Jesus again, Mr. Child of God, oh I’m a child of God, did you know I’m a child of God? Why do I bother keeping you around anyway. Oh yeah, maybe it’s because you scrimp and save and I spend. Like for my Christmas present here, (takes out a bottle of Jack Daniels and has a sip) good old Jack. (slowly savors another sip of Jack, then puts the bottle away) Love the way it goes down, beats the heck out of that cooking wine. Love it, just love it.
(starts to sing again)Love, love me do. You know I love you. I’ll always be true. So please, Love me do. Oh, Love me do. (Pause) For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son. Demons in my head, its hard to work when your head don’t. With any luck, or Gods grace I’ll get a bed at the mission tonight. Will there be room at the inn? Will it be another night in the stable, also known as the dirty little doorway of Paul’s won ton house. (Singing again) Away in a manger, no crib for a bed, the little Lord Jesus laid down his sweet head. Its hard to imagine, even for me. Believe me I can imagine a lot of things. Yet to understand that 2000 years ago God would send his Son to this earth. Born in an ivory tower, to reach out to all the perfect holier than thou people. No he was born in a stable, how humble is that? It might as well have been the doorway of Paul’s won ton house.
He came for me, for I was a lost sheep. I didn’t have to go find him in some palace. He came down here to meet me. He didn’t wait till I was good enough to come into the presence of the King. He came down to me in all my faults, and now I want to be right with God. (Mumbles to self again) what a pathetic wretch you could never make yourself right. (sings again) …that saved a wretch like me, I once was lost, but now am found. I could never bridge the gap, between myself with all my faults, and God, but Jesus could. I look back at all I’ve done in my life and see that, with out Jesus being born for me, to die for my sins, I could never see God. Jesus was born for me! (Points to the audience excitedly) and you and you and you! (pushes the shopping cart up the aisle as he makes his way out of the sanctuary) and you, no matter who you are, or what you’ve done, and you , you..….
